“She’ll Let Me Love Her The Way You Wouldn’t”
Oct 15
We just recently released a 4 song CD this week with the digital version being available on Oct 23. I woke up this morning reflecting on how one of the songs came about and the message the song ultimately delivers. Many of us have heard the Hal Lindsey quote, “Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air...but only for one second without hope.”
The song on our album, “The way you wouldn’t” is about what my brother went thru with his divorce a number of years back. The odd thing is, I wrote the lyrics, but from his perspective. I had a front row seat to his pain and recovery when he lived in our basement for a year during that time. Just to be clear, we’re not talking about the decked out man cave type basement. Picture concrete walls, with no divided rooms, and a mattress on the floor. He will tell you the ultra simplistic accommodations played into his recovery.
A number of years after this, he now had a beautiful wife and family of two kids and we were writing songs every chance we could. So this one morning, we had a writing session scheduled at my house. I was up early messing around with some ideas before he got there and “The Way You Wouldn’t” just kind of popped out. He shows up at my house and I’m a bit uncomfortable at this point and I tell him, “I’ve got something here I’m going to play for you one time, and if this is too weird or awkward, we don’t ever have to talk about it again.” I’m sure my version was pretty rough, but we got to the end and he was not only ok with it, he liked it.
Most of us have dated what we would now call a “not so good match” and many have married that person for one reason or another. Many would even tell you that there were subtle warning signs they missed or ignored along the way. But we all absolute must maintain a hope for a better future and since we were put on this planet to coexist, a lot of us like the idea of sharing the experience with someone else. The main tag line of that song is “she’ll let me love her the way you wouldn’t”. Maybe I was the only one to write that, I don’t know. I do know that I got to watch him go from the cold darkness of a concrete walls to getting everything he has ever wanted and more in a wife and family. And that my friends is a great reason to keep hope alive.
